EXCLUSIVE: A third ABC comedy pilot is getting a reshoot for midseason consideration. The network has ordered a new pilot for the single-camera half-hour How to Be a Better American. Written by Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley and produced by ABC Studios, the project centers on a father who embarks on a journey to be a better person and drags along his family kicking and screaming. It is not clear which actors from the original cast will be staying but a major recasting is expected. The two other ABC comedy pilots that have received new pilot production orders for midseason consideration are the Debra Messing starrer Wright vs. Wrong and Awkward Situations For Men, starring British writer/on-air personality Danny Wallace. On the drama side, the network has put five scripts on fast track for summer pilot orders: Charlie’s Angels, Department Zero, Behind the Blue, Ghostworld and Island Of Women. Additionally, ABC has ordered six additional scripts for Edgar Floats.

Mad Love, the Sony-produced ensemble comedy pilot, has been a frontrunner for a midseason order at CBS. Now I hear that the network has offered the studio a full 13-episode midseason pickup for the project and things look good for a deal to close. One main holdup for an order before the CBS upfront presentation in May was the situation with Lizzy Caplan, who guest starred in the pilot but wouldn't commit to a series. That character is now being recast, and I hear Judy Greer's name as someone the network and the studio like. Meanwhile, talks between CBS and 20th TV over a midseason order for drama pilot Chaos continue. The issue there has been the size of the order, something that is not an factor in the case of Mad Love. Written by Matt Tarses and executive produced by Tarses and his sister, producer Jamie Tarses, Mad Love revolves around four friends in New York, two falling in love, the other two not so much.

EXCLUSIVE: I hear Sarah Chalke is in talks to co-star in the CBS comedy Mad Love, which is close to a 13-episode midseason order at the network. She would replace Minka Kelly who was originally cast in the role. The project would reunite the Scrubs alumna with former Scrubs writer-producer Matt Tarses who created Mad Love and is executive producing it with Jamie Tarses.

Mad Love is an ensemble comedy about four friends in New York - Henry (Jason Biggs), Kate (Chalke), Larry (Tyler Labine) and Connie - who are looking for love. Connie was played in the pilot by Lizzy Caplan as a guest star and that role is now being recast as Caplan couldn't commit to the series.

This is the second round of recastings on Mad Love, which replaced Dan Fogler with Labine and Ashley Austin Morris with Caplan just before the pilot was shot. Chalke's character Kate is described as a pretty, clean-scrubbed Midwestern who is a sweet but strong-willed romantic. She falls in love with Henry at the top of the Empire State Building and often tackles her cousin and best friend, Connie, to the ground in order to get her way.

Mad Love, produced by Sony TV and CBS Studios, is expected to be joined by the 20th TV-produced midseason drama Chaos, whose pickup deal at CBS is said to be nearing completion. Shalke was in demand and did two pilots this year, ABC's Freshmen and CBS' Team Spitz, which also was produced by Sony.

EXCLUSIVE: Fox’s drama pilot Breakout Kings may break out of the rejected pilots heap. I hear that 20th TV, which produced Breakout Kings with Chernin Entertainment, is in preliminary talks with A&E about possibly taking in the project.
The pilot, about a team of U.S. marshals and a group of convicts who race against the clock to apprehend escaped prisoners, was a sentimental favorite of many industry insiders this season and became hot after a great early studio testing. It was one of Fox’s top three hourlong pilots but ultimately missed the cut when the network opted to go with only two new drama series, Lonestar and Ride-Along, and keep both of its bubble dramas, Lie To Me and Human Target.
20th immediately sent out the pilot, written by Matt Olmstead and Nick Santora and directed by Gavin Hood, to a number of broadcast and cable networks.
At A&E, Breakout Kings would fit into the character-driven procedural direction the channel is taking with the upcoming cop drama The Glades, which also is male-centered. Breakout Kings stars Laz Alonso, Domenick Lombardozzi, Malcolm Goodwin, Jimmi Simpson, Brooke Nevin and Nicole Steinwedell.

Evo, napokon :D

Jason Biggs, Sarah Chalke, Judy Greer and Tyler Labine Star in a New Comedy for Mid-Season
The comedy MAD LOVE, starring Jason Biggs, Sarah Chalke, Judy Greer and Tyler Labine, has been ordered by CBS for mid-season.
MAD LOVE is about a quartet of single friends in New York City – two who are falling in love and two who despise each other… at least for now.
Matt Tarses and Jamie Tarses are the executive producers for Sony Pictures Entertainment in association with CBS Television Studios. Pamela Fryman directed the pilot.

EXCLUSIVE: Yesterday was June 30, a key date in the broadcast development calendar when the options on all actors in this year's crop of pilots expired unless they were extended. Cast options on several pilots were indeed picked up, keeping the projects in contention for midseason. The list includes the ABC comedies Wright Vs. Wrong and Awkward Situations For Men, which are expected to shoot new pilots, the CBS comedy Team Spitz, as well as the CW drama HMS. A third ABC comedy project, How to be a Better American, also will shoot a new pilot but with an all-new cast as none of the actors from the original pilot have been extended. Most of the other pilots that picked up actors also are not keeping their entire casts. On Team Spitz, only star Rob Riggle was extended. Similarly, on Wright Vs. Wrong only star Debra Messing was picked up but co-star Cheryl Hines could potentially return under her new talent deal with ABC. On Awkward Situations, star/co-creator/executive producer Danny Wallace is staying put, with two of his co-stars, Laura Prepon and Tony Hale, in negotiations to join him.

The cast of HMS granted the CW and studio Warner Bros. TV seven-day extensions as the network is expected to make a pickup decision on the pilot next week. HMS is the only CW pilot from this year's crop remaining in contention for midseason. (No Nomads, sorry!)

All those decisions went down to the wire, hours before the options were set to expire but nowhere was the situation more dramatic than on the CBS drama pilot Chaos where the options were allowed to lapse, essentially marking the end of the pilot's chances for a midseason order. The only project that dealt with the issue early this year was the ABC/WBTV dramedy Edgar Floats, which received an order for 6 additional scripts during upfront week. Two weeks ago, the studio extended the option on co-star Robert Patrick, releasing everyone else, including star Tom Cavanagh.

The looming deadline on the pilot actors’ options also helped push through the finish line the series order deals to two pilots, Mad Love at CBS and Breakout Kings at A&E, all closing in the past few days, as well as Fox's Monday order of two additional scripts to comedy Breaking In, leading to Sony TV's decision to extend all actors in the pilot, including star Christian Slater and co-star Bret Harrison. Among studios, Sony has the most pilots that have gotten a new lease on life post-upfronts: Mad Love, Wright Vs. Wrong, Team Spitz and Breaking In. Awkward Situations, Edgar Floats and HMS hail from WBTV (HMS is a co-production with CBS Studios), Breakout Kings is from 20th Century Fox TV, now produced by its cable division Fox21, while How To Be a Better American is from ABC Studios.

Nomads :( CW :flop: :flop: :rigo:
