CBS is exiling "Harper's Island" to Saturdays, which continues to serve as a clearinghouse for original series that didn't quite cut it during the week.
According to insiders, "Harper's" got a reprieve from outright cancellation thanks to its live-plus-seven Nielsen ratings, which exhibited solid DVR interest in the show's premiere. "Harper's" also earned a healthy online streaming audience.
In other words, "Harper's" Thursday night performance was mediocre enough that it didn't deserve a home behind "CSI" - one of the best time slots on TV - but it wasn't weak enough to be taken off the air all together.
"Harper's," a murder mystery from CBS Paramount Network TV, was also promoted as a limited-run series, and all 13 episodes have already been produced and edited already -- which makes it easier for Eye to let the show run its course.
"Harper's" will now air on Saturdays at 9 p.m., leading into "48 Hours Mystery," giving the Eye two original series on the night.
Last Thursday, "Harper's" averaged 7 million viewers and a 1.9 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 - placing the show third in the slot, behind ABC's "Private Practice" and NBC's new "Southland."
Earlier this spring, NBC made a similar move with "Kings," opting to push that show to Saturday after it opened poorly on Sunday nights. Peacock later pulled "Kings" off, but plans to bring the show back to complete its run this summer. (Peacock did the same thing earlier this year with "Crusoe," which also wound up on Saturday nights.)
CBS will fill the Thursday 10 p.m. slot this week with a repeat "Criminal Minds," and next week with a repeat "CSI." On Thursday, May 14, Eye will air the season finale of "CSI: NY" in the slot.
"CSI: NY" moves to Thursday from its usual Wednesday spot that week because the Eye will now air the two-hour "Criminal Minds" season finale from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on May 20. "Minds" was originally set to run 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. that night - but with President Obama holding a press conference this Wednesday, Eye suddenly had to push Wednesday laffers "Old Christine" and "Gary Unmarried" a week.
