After spending all of her 15 years bouncing from one foster family to another in Portland, Oregon, Lux (Britt Robertson, "Swingtown") has decided it's time to take control of her life and become an emancipated minor. Her journey through the legal maze leads Lux to her biological father, 30-something Nate "Baze" Bazile (Kristoffer Polaha, "Mad Men"), who owns a bar, lives like an aging frat-boy with two slacker roommates, and is astonished to learn that he has a teenage daughter. Lux is equally astonished when Baze reveals that her mother is Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby, "E.R."), a star on the local "Morning Madness" radio show, along with her on-air partner and real-life boyfriend, Ryan Thomas (Kerr Smith, "Eli Stone"). Lux has been listening to Cate's voice on the radio as long as she can remember, so she feels an instant connection with the mom she's never met. Baze takes Lux to meet Cate, who is shocked and saddened to learn that Lux has grown up in foster care, but thrilled to finally meet her beautiful daughter. When a judge decides that Lux isn't ready for emancipation and unexpectedly grants temporary joint custody to Baze and Cate, they agree to try to get past the awkwardness and make a belated attempt to give Lux the family she deserves.

The CW's "Life Unexpected" has a premiere date -- Jan 18 -- where it will replace "Gossip Girl" -- temporarily! -- as part of a CW strategy to keep original episodes airing on Monday nights. "Unexpected" will take the place of "Gossip Girl" for its run, then "Gossip" will return for another 12 episodes. The logic here is that "Gossip" performs stronger when aired with fewer interruptions (last year the show dropped significantly in the ratings during in the early part of the year as the network cycled in repeats).

OMFG: The CW is making plans to boost buzzworthy new drama "Life Unexpected" by slotting it in the "Gossip Girl" timeslot.

"LUX" will inherit the "GG" 9 p.m. Monday timeslot on Jan. 18, industry insiders confirm. What's unclear, however, is how long it will stay in that slot.

"GG" is expected to take several weeks off from the schedule, but it is not moving to a new night. That could mean that after a few weeks in the 9 p.m. Monday slot, "LUX" will shift to a more permanent slot-- though just where on the CW's schedule it's headed remained unclear Monday afternoon.

It would make sense to rest "GG" for several weeks so that the show could air with a string of uninterrupted episodes in the spring. Erratic scheduling last year slowed momentum for the series.

And when "GG" does return, the CW could decide to rest "One Tree Hill" for a couple of months, slotting "LUX" into the 8 p.m. Monday position.

In any case, the Monday move is the strongest sign yet of the CW's confidence in "LUX," which network insiders believe could be a transformative drama for the network in the vein of "Gilmore Girls" -- a series critics kvell over and viewers embrace.

Valjda će onda kad se GG vrati stavit seriju umjesto OTHa... Jer tako i tako deru po novim epizodama sad preko jeseni, i ako tako nastave po toj logici bi OTH trebao imat 30 epizoda

I drago mi je da ne ide protiv Idola, samo mi nije baš jasno ovo s GG. Sve CW serije se vraćaju prvi tjedan u siječnju s novim epizodama, što onda znači da GG neće imati nove epizode do ožujka?
Samo da ne naprave zbrku pa da svaki tjedan mijenjaju dane i termine

That's the slot currently held by "Gossip Girl," which will go on hiatus for several weeks, before returning in the spring to finish up its 24-episode order, with 12 originals in a row. Once "Girl" is back, "Life Unexpected" will then shift down to 8 p.m., while "One Tree Hill" takes a break. The goal for the CW: A Monday night of all original episodes, from January until the end of the season.

"Life Unexpected" hasn't yet aired one episode but star Kerr Smith says he's certain they're getting a second season.

"This show is very old-school WB. It brings back the old roots, the kind of show like 'Dawson's' or 'Felicity' that really made The WB what it is. In my opinion, The CW really needs to hang on to that," the actor tells Zap2it.

"Actually, I'll just say it: I'm not even worried about [getting a season 2]. I've been doing this a long time and it's so rare when you feel this way about a project. Everything is falling into place. The people, the material. We're a big family up here after only four months and I have no doubt that people are going to fall in love with it."

"Life" is just about ready to finish filming the 13-episode first season. The cast and crew have only two episodes left to shoot, which will see them wrapping just two weeks after the series premiere on Monday, Jan. 18.

So how is Smith (who plays Ryan, radio co-host and boyfriend to Shiri Appleby's Cate) going to spend the interim? "I'm looking at a couple movies. It would be great if I could get something, but it's so hard with such a short window. And hopefully I'll be going back to -- excuse me, I will be going back to work in July," Smith laughs.
